This season UUFN will again be participating in the Newark Area Welfare Committee’s annual food drive. Last year, thanks to the generosity of Newark area schools, businesses, and churches, their families and support staff, as well as many others in our community the committee was able to provide food boxes to 329 local families who needed help. A total of 828 adults and children received a week’s supply of canned and fresh food, as well as a frozen turkey. 29,170 pounds of food, over 15 tons, went out!
At UUFN items we will be collecting include all canned goods, like vegetables, fruit, meat, spaghetti sauce and anything else you think useful in cans. We will also collect all boxed goods like pasta, rice, crackers, cereal, and other boxed goods. Plastic containers are okay as well, examples include peanut and other kinds of nut butter, jelly, parmesan cheese, oils for cooking, honey. Items that are especially needed are the ones that are more expensive: plastic jars of nut butter, jelly in plastic containers, canned fruit, canned spaghetti sauce, canned tuna and chicken, and cereal.
There will be a box in the lobby for you to drop off your donations of cans, boxes and plastic containers of food.
We will also be collecting frozen turkeys! So look for those opportunities to grab free one at the supermarket. If you are donating those please put them in the freezer in the kitchen.
If you would like to make a monetary donation please send your check directly to the Newark Area Welfare Committee. Their mailing address is P.O. Box 951, Newark, DE 19715-0951. You could mention that you are associated with UUFN in the memo.
Last Day to donate is Wednesday, December 12th.
Let’s make this UUFN’s most successful food drive ever!
