Authentic Without Apologies: Intersections of Sorrow and Pride

Today is a day spent in remembrance of how far our transgender and non-binary community has come, and how far it still has to go. Every year, people trying to live their lives authentically are brutally attacked, bullied, and shamed in the media and in politics. They struggle for acceptance in their homes, schools, jobs and communities.

Why is it so hard for others to offer acceptance? How can we be better allies? How can a community feel pride in the face of such negative criticism? Violence against the trans community hurts all of us. Pride felt in alliance with the trans community can uplift all of us. Let us remember those whose lives were cut short in their search to live authentically and unapologetically.
