Championing Freedom from Torda to Today

Sunday, January 11, 2026 10:30am

Presenter: Rev. Paula Maiorano

Service Description:

In 1568 Unitarians played a pivotal role in influencing the King of Hungary to declare the Edict of Torda. This landmark decree was among the earliest legal acknowledgments of religious toleration in Europe. By establishing the principle of freedom of conscience, the Edict of Torda set an important precedent for religious pluralism and helped pave the way for greater acceptance of diverse beliefs.

Today, Unitarian Universalists are confronted with efforts to undermine religious tolerance within the United States. Considering the historic contributions of Unitarians toward religious freedom, it is essential to reflect on how we can actively resist these attempts and continue to uphold and promote the values of religious pluralism and freedom of conscience.
