This church is the remnant of a once thriving African American Community known as School Hill. The church first opened in a log cabin in 1848 (well before the Civil War). African Americans had many small frame houses in this neighborhood, and had a vibrant school at George Wilson School (now George Wilson Community Center, owned by the City). The school was run on a shoestring, but the education was excellent, many teachers had a Ph.D. The community knew teachers/students/parents alike had to be (and were) twice as good as their white counterparts. The community had its own movie theater, barber shop, grocery; race laws kept them isolated. Until recently, many without generational wealth rented frame houses in the adjacent parcels, children played in the woods and stream on that property. But the property owners ‘developed’ resulting in dislocations. Now student rentals result in trash, traffic, noise, and vandalisms to the graveyards. Those who grew up in School Hill Community scattered. But they still had their church. Then on Aug 6th, 2024 a drunk driver crashed a car into the church. This months share the plate will be given to St. John AM Church to help them rebuild.
